The month of February is synonymous with Black History. During this time we will see the ads embedded with innumerable quotations from Martin Luther King Jr. and pictures of Africa Legendary American athletes and African-American "firsts", like Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in baseball. Although it is always good to see the images of the great black American, I also wonder whether this conclusion is required 28 days of African American culture. Morgan Freeman as once said: "Why the history of my people be delegated to a month? "As our population continues to become more diverse in nature and celebrate the differences in American culture, the question must be posed. Is there still a need for Black History Month?
Dr. Carter G. Woodson is the creator of Black History Week. This gentleman is responsible for brining in the history of African-Americans to the national forefront. As this celebration of a week spent in a month, some wondered if possibly this month grow and become a permanent point of the fabric of American history. The textbooks that our children are taught often have only a chapter or two, in reference the history of these great Americans. Far too many citizens of this country are aware of the contributions that black people have made to the United States, African Americans included. Just knowing the history of Afro-American "rock stars" like Martin Luther King, Jackie Robinson, Thurgood Marshall, Malcolm X, and Jessie Owens not enough to justify the whole story of black culture.
We are often out of time video feeds from Martin Luther King (Martin Luther King) giving his "I dream speech "during the March on Washington as a catalyst to ring in the celebration of our illustrious history. Reasons like this are the reason for this month continues still necessary. While my love and admiration for Dr. large are rooted in their struggle and love for this town, which is not the only representation we have of the history of black. The Rev. Joseph Lowery of Atlanta is a prolific speaker and was an ambitious soldier during the turbulent times of the Civil Rights movement. Credited be a co-founder of the historic Christian Leadership Conference South with Martin Luther King Jr. His work, along with Ralph Abernathy, Medgar Evers, Fred Shuttlesworth, and Bayard Rustin is why African Americans have a solid grounding in American culture today. Too many Americans are unaware of their sacrifices, not to mention names, to realize the impact they have on American society. These reasons alone why Black History Month is still necessary.
The 2008 presidential race serves as a mirror of American society today. 40 years ago, when Rev. King was assassinated the idea of having a woman and an African-American race for President was insane and UN-reachable. This moment is what Dr. King fought for equality. If the past is any indication of where it is headed our society, we have a bright future and foggy to wait.
Survey the majority of Americans on the issue of Black history and most of them are capable of giving validity to why Black History Month is no longer necessary. Most of our population is fully aware of the contributions that black people have made to American culture. Of hip-hop music, sports, education, finance and politics, African Americans have played a key role in each field. This information is gradually being integrated into the American history books and history texts. While African Americans still struggle to make progress in certain industries, it is difficult ignore the contributions that black people have made to American culture. In an era with 24-hour news stations and the information that can be accessed through Internet at any time of day, you have no excuse to avoid the history of African Americans.
Removing the label of Black History Month from February can be a bit premature. There is still work to be done to integrate Black History into American history through textbooks and any other source of information. However, the argument has some merit. Once the day comes that we are truly able to say the month is no longer necessary because the subject is discussed in the same category as American history, we will all be able to celebrate as one voice with a tone.
