The diamond wedding ring is a fairly recent phenomenon, even sixty years ago, most couples married wore simple gold bands. Today, the diamond wedding ring is quite common. There are even diamond wedding bands for those who prefer the diamond wedding rings which has a stone in them.
The History of Diamond Jewelry
Diamond Jewelry has enjoyed and desired for centuries. However, it was not until about 500 years ago was born the art and science of diamond cutting. Most stones that find their way wedding rings in diamonds are cut and appraised in the Belgian city of Antwerp, which has been the center of the diamond business since the mid-1500s.
The DeBeers company – formed in the 1880s by Sir Cecil Rhodes, to whom was African colony Rhodesia (now independent Zimbabwe and Zambia) was named – was instrumental in creating an artificial market for diamond jewelry, including wedding diamond ring sets, where none had existed previously. It is true the archduke Maximilian I of Austria presented his wife, Mary of Burgundy a diamond wedding ring at the time of their wedding in 1477, but that does not set a precedent general. This precedent had to wait another 423 years.
"Diamonds Are Forever"
The phrase "a diamond is forever", is became the basis not only of the James Bond novel by Ian Fleming and the movie and the song that came out of it, but the most brilliant advertising campaign of all time. The DeBeers company uses this phrase to convince people to abandon the clear bands of gold that had been traditional for married couples during centuries, and embrace her fashion line design puts the wedding ring with diamonds.
The campaign was very successful in a few years, gold bands Plain had been replaced by diamond wedding bands and rings set with stones.
A similar campaign was conducted by the U.S. diamond jewelry industry, the market was aimed at couples planning to marry. The idea was to convince the American public in the tradition of an "old" in which men wore diamond engagement rings, as well as promised. This particular campaign was rather less successful, but helping increase the popularity of the Rings diamond wedding among American couples.
Diamond Jewelry Today
Rough diamonds are sent to a major diamond centers in Antwerp, Tel Aviv, New York, London or Singapore, where they are sorted and cut, after that, undergo an assessment by carat (size and weight), color, clarity and cut. After this, jewelers purchase these stones in lots and used as places of diamond wedding rings and other types of jewelry.
