How do I know the differences between raw quartz and diamonds in the rough?
I found a small stone, clear quartz as a raw or diamond in the rough, how to know the differences? How do I prove that? or be so sure that is quartz? thanks
They almost need a tester diamond. Quarts and diamond are close together on the Moh hardness scale and correct identification can be difficult especially because both the forms in a variety of colors (although it is always light colored diamonds). Their model is probably too small to test for zero in the streak and is similar to that of quartz. Differences; Diamond is carbon, quartz, silicon, diamond has a hardness of 10, the quartz is between 7 and 8 depending on what you are testing mineral quartzite. And yes, quartz is in clear crystals and quartz crystals all 6-sided. Diamond is rarely found in flat-sided crystals. I've been told but never tried this test. A diamond will invisible to drop a glass container of kerosene. Many major cities have to least one year.They mineral show almost always have experts on hand giving free mineral identification or direct you to a person skilled in the art. Many universities have also a department of geology, maybe I could get help there, or as others have suggested, a jeweler. It is likely since quartz is the most common mineral on the planet, while the diamond is one of the rarest.
