The dog was called Imperial Imperial China, Ja-Pah, and the imperial color solid is called Chin Ssu Ha-Pah in China's Imperial Palace. In early English books are called Imperial or "Pekinese Type" if they did not know what to call them. The Imperial was always a separate dog from the Pekinese, Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso. They were being bred along side in the early days, but were not the same dog. The Shih Tzu came much later.2 The Shih Tzu Kou or Liondog, as the early imperial were called, were bred in the likeness of the Buddhist perception of the lion because when Buddha came to earth from heaven riding on a lion. Therefore, the Imperial is also believed that to be holy or tribute dogs and were highly appreciated. When an Imperial became too large, then it was death and it was highly undesirable. As you can see from this antique Chinese fan that the Imperial was a small dog indeed.1
In later years these great imperial called a Shih Tzu. A representation of an ancient tapestry Imperial, Shih Tzu and a Pekinese was found recently dating to before the time of Christ. You can see the full gap of dogs in this tapestry. This puts the death of a rumor that Imperial is a Shih Tzu and a Shih Tzu is a mix between a Llasa and a Pekingese. The Shih Tzu, Pekinese and Imperial have been completely separate breeds of dogs for over 2000 years. The first ancestors of the Imperial were given to the emperors of the Manchu dynasty of China as gifts of great honor and could only be owned by the emperors. In China the dogs became little temple dogs and were kept in the palace and carefully stored and cared for by the eunuchs of the court. As the lion dogs were owned by the royal family, who were not well known outside the Imperial Palace and said that any person unlawfully owning one was sentenced to death. However, it is thought that puppies which did not meet the Dowager Empress "high, sold in secret by the eunuchs of the nobility outside the palace. The Dowager Empress Tzu-Hsi was greatly interested in dogs and during her reign she was personally concerned with their breeding and welfare. They were bred to be loyal companions, bed warmers and extend through the feet of the Emperor and Empress, having to take charge of judicial affairs for keep your feet warm. She would keep a few and Imperial Shih Tzu around her at all times. It was once the fashion of the dogs carried in their kimono sleeves.2
After the death of the widow of Empress in 1908, the breeding of dogs was not
more important. The young Emperor and Empress were not interested in dogs and some were given as gifts to men and women of the nobility in England and Netherlands.3 This is how the Imperial was introduced in the west. In 1938, an individual level is set for the Shih Tzu. When dog breeders did not know what to do with the Imperials so are grouped together in the
Shih Tzu. In the United States, breeders were the first Shih Tzu in late 1930 and gained further popularity in the 1960s with many imports from England and Europe.
Our dogs Imperial China went to the Netherlands and Australia, and remained purebred and small.4 In the 1960s some small farmers brought to the United States. These breeders fought hard for acknowledging their ignorance, but in the AKC only classify our lovely Chinese Imperial Shih Tzu.5
This is how many of the imperial mixed with the Shih Tzu. Now the dedicated breeders of Chinese Imperial Dog are fighting so hard to get recognized again. We've been pretty successful so far.
The Chinese Imperial dog was accepted as the race is different from that of
Shih Tzu by the NCA as of March 2005 and the CPR, UABR, and the NKC in
2006. Chinese Imperial Dog is also internationally renowned for the IPDBA.
A breed club has been formed to support this new breed and is dedicated to
promotion and preservation of this wonderful dog.
