What does it mean if the seal on a silver necklace that has the numbers 925 and another stamp which i cannot distinguish
The Seal is stamped .925 sterling silver. This means that 92.5% of the metal is silver, the other 7.5% is added a metal (alloy) with silver to increase strength silver. Pure / fine silver (.999) is too soft for many jewelry applications. The seal 925 does not indicate what is alloyed with silver. In the U.S., only means that 92.5% the metal is silver. The usual silver alloy is copper. But recently, new alloys have been in the market which contain metals of the platinum family (rhodium, palladium) and other metals to tarnish the process inhibit the effects of sterling. These new alloys are usually more expensive than traditional sterling for the cost of the metals of platinum family and because most of the welding of these require new Sterling 10k gold solder instead of traditional silver solder have good color match. The other mark is the mark of the manufacturer's Friends / brand. U.S. FTC regulations require that any piece that contrasted with a brand of metal precious also should have the mark of a manufacturer. If no manufacturer's mark, it is illegal to seal the piece, even if the pound sterling, 14k, 18k, etc.
