The first indication of an infestation is usually the appearance of small moths in the kitchen, or the presence of insects or larvae dry foods.

Meal Moth

The Indian meal moth pest is the most common foods found in the home. Feed moth larvae meal in dry products such as cereals, flour, rice, nuts and vegetables, and sweets and chocolate. An infestation with moth larvae food is characterized by the appearance of silk threads that are left by the larvae which feed and move through the food supply. The adult moth is small with Reddish-brown wings and a whitish-gray body.

Warehouse Beetle

The beetle feeds on grain warehouse, cocoa, flour, nuts, pulses of starch, spices, candy and pet food. Adult beetles are about one-eighth inch long, with body color dark brown oval. The larvae are about a quarter of an inch long, stiff hairs on the abdomen. Ingestion of these hairs can cause irritation of the mouth and the tract tract.

Beetle and grain merchant sawtooth grain Beetle

Both of these beetles are about a tenth of an inch long, with small projections that look like saw teeth in his chest. In both adult and larval stages, these beetles feed on grains, flours and meals, and cereals, nuts and dried fruits.

Red Flour Beetle and Confused Flour Beetle

In both adult stages of these beetles are about one-seventh of an inch long, bright reddish-brown oval bodies. They eat cereals, grains, flour, dried fruits, herbs, meats and nuts.

Pharmacy Cigarette Beetle and Beetle

These species are an eighth of an inch long in adulthood, with Light Bodies brown. The cigarette beetle is more common than the drugstore beetle.

The cigarette beetle feeds mainly from cigarettes, cigars and snuff, but will also feed on spices and dried herbs, nuts, grains, fruits and seeds. The drugstore beetle feeds on a wide variety of foods, but is more commonly found in cereals, animal feed and medicines.

Weevils

Granary, rice and bean weevils are not commonly in the home, these species tend to be more often found in warehouses and barns. However, if infested food is brought into the house that can infest other foodstuffs. The beetles tend to be slightly larger than the beetles, and has long nose overhang. Granary and rice weevils feed more often in whole grains, while the bean weevils feed on legumes such as beans and peas.

Treatment and prevention of infestations

The damage caused by pests in the pantry is caused by contamination with products pests such as droppings, bands, and hair. Contaminated Food not be eaten.

Pantry pests to thrive in our homes because they provide food and warmth. The key to preventing infestations of pantry pests is preventing access to food sources. However, the total elimination of an infestation may last several months, since some parasites may survive for long periods without food.

The first step in eliminating an infestation is to locate its source. Please note that moths or beetles in the kitchen, find the source or sources and remove them from your kitchen immediately. If the infestation is small, limited to one or two packages of food, control is usually as simple as sealing and discarding packages.

However, if you have several sources of infestation, control can be more difficult. All packages of dry foods, including without opening should be inspected carefully for larvae or adult beetles. Any package with signs of infestation, such as small holes or presence the straps should be discarded.

If the infestation is widespread, it is better to remove all packages and shelves of the kitchen scrub with soap and water, paying special attention to cracks and crevices to remove all larvae and unhatched eggs.

Finally, practice good hygiene in the kitchen to prevent reinfestation.
